Placed in a cold sterile room I sit opposite Detective Cosimo with a uniformed officer in attendance. Detective Cosimo wastes no time in getting to the point. He asks me what I know about Nick Alto. So that’s what this is all about.

I tell the detective I had met Nick Alto on a number of occasions. I admit our relationship was less than friendly.

Detective Cosimo suggests the relationship was more than “less friendly”, even perhaps hostile contempt.

I tell the detective sure, I hated Nick. He was obnoxious and conceited. There were probably lots of people who felt this way about him judging by the article in the paper. Detective Cosimo points out that I took note of the article in the paper.

For goodness sake! Of course I took note of the article. It was a murder. A murder that took place right next door to my own home!

Yes, says Detective Cosimo – Yes it was; right next door.

Detective Cosimo asks me if I had ever conducted business with Nick Alto. So this is the thread they hope to stitch me up with? I wonder where that snippet of information may have come from. Jared Frio perhaps.

With a sigh I tell the detective that there had been a business plan that had fell through. I ended up losing out on the deal and there wasn’t much I could do about it. End of story.

Detective Cosimo says that maybe I did do something about it. That maybe losing out on a business deal that was worth simoleons had driven me to commit murderous revenge.

I have grown tired of these childish questions and theories.

I erupt in frustration. Don’t waste your time detective! I’m not a forensic scientist, but I am sure that tests were conducted to determine the time of Nick’s death. The fact is that I was working late the night Nick Alto was murdered and there are witnesses and work records to prove it. After work I went straight home. My bet is that you will find I was in the laboratory.

As for your revenge theories, all you have is coincidence and speculation that you are trying unjustly to pin on me. The truth is – and you must already know this – is that there were many people who despised Nick Alto as I did!

Now unless I am under arrest or you have some evidence of substance to back your fantastical notions I believe I am free to go.

I am told I am free to go – for now. Ridiculous.

I break the news to Adam.

Adam’s reaction takes me by surprise. He unleashes insults upon Sandi in a seething rage, accusing her of being nothing more than a trash-trawling gold-digger taking advantage of a lonely, vulnerable old man. Sandi tenses, her muscles knotting in anger at the assault being handed to her. I can’t believe what I am hearing.

Enough!

I rebuke Adam’s tirade of filth directed at my beloved wife and command him to stop. How dare he think to abuse Sandi! I tell Adam his behaviour is disgraceful like a spoilt child. If he thinks me vulnerable I tell Adam, just try and start again with his offensiveness, I’ll be the one to damn well finish it!

Adam backs off incensed in silence, his eyes black pits of fury. I love my son but I will not allow anyone to try and humiliate Sandi like that. This is going to take some time to resolve.

Adam confronts me again later at home. He pleads that I come to my senses. He is convinced that my relationship with Sandi is a huge mistake that will lead to ruin. I tell Adam he is being irrational. Sandi and I have a love built on mutual respect. I am a man capable of making my own decisions proven by my accomplishments. It is pointless for Adam to continue in his protests.

Subdued in frustration, through gritting teeth and slowly watering eyes Adam says I have betrayed his mother. He asks me how I could have forgotten her so easily.

Oh Adam my son. Do you really think it’s easy for me to forget?

It is because of the love I had with Jamie that I married again. We had a connection so strong, so wonderful our hearts sealed one to another. In Jamie I found someone who I could share the intimacies of my heart, the passions of my soul. She filled me with an unconquerable hope as if I could achieve anything – Invincible!

When your mother passed away I felt as if I had been hollowed out with a knife. That blade of despair cut deep into me. It is this gaping chasm that longs to be fulfilled again as I had been with Jamie. Lonely and vulnerable? Perhaps that was so then. I loved Jamie. I will always love her. But she is gone and I struggle with the emptiness. Sandi eases the loss I feel. With her my hope returns.

My confession abates my son’s resentment for now I can see that he does not fully understand.

LaToya interrupts us. She has a concerned look on her face. She tells me there are two Police Detectives waiting out front to speak with me. A little confused I go to greet them. I am met by two stern individuals. They introduce themselves – Detectives Lamont and Cosimo.

They want me to go with them to the police station for questioning?

There is no need to be despondent. After all, I am a successful creature-robot cross breeder held in high regard by my fellow colleagues. I have also managed to accumulate a substantial fortune in my account. A person in my position has a world of adventure just waiting, beckoning.

I decide to join the gym to revitalize my fading physique. I’m not dead yet.

I meet Sandi French at the gym. She introduces herself to me. Sandi works at City Hall in the cubicles of bylaws and consents but hopes to further her career to the realms of influence and authority someday. I feel her passion for politics as she shares her ideals on the building of a better nation. Sandi mentions she has heard of my groundbreaking research and admits she is impressed. We get to know one another better.

She has wisdom beyond her years. Sandi beguiles me with her charm and striking figure.

I believe she likes me too.

Sandi has a young son named Jeffrey. She tells me Jeffrey’s father left them not long after he was born. Finding herself in a desperate situation of raising a child alone without support from anyone, Sandi recollects descending into hopelessness. It was through tear-drenched determination that Sandi says she was able to claw her way above depravity and despair, vowing never to return to such depths again.

I tell Sandi that she need never fear of a life without hope ever again. I will be here to care and protect her. My love will enfold her with peace. Confessing my affections for Sandi, I ask her to marry me.

Sandi says yes. I have found love again! We marry immediately like love-struck teens caught up in the excitement. I haven’t even told Adam yet!

I call Adam and tell him to meet me at Old Pier Beach, there’s some wonderful news to share.

Although I believe it won’t be this way for long. Adam has grown into a fine young man and his relationship with Latoya is flourishing. When I see them together I see the love and affection they have for one another. Latoya is a radiant beauty with a generous heart. I am pleased for my son.

Adam and Latoya are wed in spring as the flowers bloom. It is an intimate service at the park opposite our home. The field is sprinkled in lavender and violet as the pond glistens from the setting sun in languid amber. It is a scene of splendour as two become one.

How I wish Jamie was here.

The young couple waste no time in starting a family of there own. I invite Adam and Latoya to live with me. With a few additions to the house, there will be room enough for all of us. I eagerly await the arrival of my first grandchild.

It’s a boy! Adam is overjoyed. They name the baby Laman. Latoya is happy too but quite exhausted from giving birth. She returns home that very evening though. Latoya tells Adam she would like a little brother or sister for Laman – and soon. Adam has a stunned expression from Latoya’s request. He’s probably wondering what he has got himself into.

In the early hours of the morning I feel Jamie stir and get out of bed. It sounds as if she is phoning someone. I sit up to see what is happening and ask her if everything is okay. Jamie says she is leaving a message on the work answer phone. She won’t be in today. She is feeling ill again. Jamie tells me she will make an appointment for the doctor later in the morning.

Jamie feels like staying up awhile so I join her in the lounge. I tell her a joke about a talking duck.

Anything for a smile from this beautiful lady.

Eventually Jamie falls back to sleep but I stay awake and watch over her.

She looks so peaceful. I count myself lucky to have Jamie in my life. I slowly doze off to sleep on that thought.

I awaken a short while later. I try to rouse Jamie and remind her to make the doctor’s appointment.

But she does not move.

I try again. Nothing.

I wrestle for self-control as I feel a rise of panic. I quickly call emergency services. They are on their way. I do my best to resuscitate her while waiting for the ambulance. With each failing minute my panic succumbs to grief.

My Jamie is gone.

The paramedics arrive but it is obvious they are too late. A doctor is called in to confirm Jamie’s death.

When Adam learns that his mother is dead he breaks down in tears. I comfort him in my arms. His heart has been crushed. I tell him it’s okay to cry; his mother left this world peacefully; death is a part of life and one day we will see her again; in time the agony will pass and the happy memories will prevail. I tell Adam his mother loves him – and I love him too. Together we’ll get through.

I try to convince myself also that this is true.

My dear sweet Jamie…

I’m starting to show my age.

And Adam has grown! Just like a teenager, he is almost always on the phone. It is like an extension of his body, a permanent fixture to his earlobe. Friends, girlfriends, it’s hard to keep up with him now. Adam is in a world of changes.

Adam is fairly active around town. No time for work just yet. He has mentioned a young woman named Latoya. It sounds like a relationship that has potential to get serious. But not too serious yet we hope.

Adam goes out collecting with his friends. Some of the things he gets given are rather odd. What would a teenager want with a pot plant or broken venetian blinds I wonder? Adam says he just likes collecting those sorts of things.

Oh well.

He also loves painting. Now that is something I can appreciate.

Jamie still helps develop Adam’s academic skills after work. He has excellent grades but I suspect he will choose a career in the arts rather than the scientific field like his father and mother. That is fine with me. I just want our son to be happy.

Jamie and I catch a movie now and then, go out to dinner, and enjoy each other’s company.

But we move a little slower, grow tired faster and the senses have become dulled somewhat. The youthful days have definitely left us.

And also…

Jamie hasn’t been feeling very well lately.

I’ve decided to take up fishing so Adam and I can have a closer relationship. We both think fishing is fun. Many a deep conversation has formed behind a 12 pound fishing line.

What’s this? It’s in the paper!

Nick Alto!

Evil begets evil. Nick was a loathsome creep. Like a bloodsucking leach, I would have enjoyed burning him off with a flame then cast him splattering against a hard surface.

I wanted revenge for what he had done to me. He stirred my anger to a dark place that’s for sure. There will be little remorse. I won’t be the only one who feels this way.

He had it coming.

“Prominent business tycoon, Nick Alto, was found dead at his Sunset Valley home yesterday morning in what police say are suspicious circumstances.

Detective Inspector Gavin Agee said police were called to the Summer Hill Court address about 7.30am by a local resident.

“It is still too early for police to speculate on both the circumstances and cause that contributed to the death of Mr. Alto” Mr. Agee said.

A large cordon was put up around the property today while experts conducted a scene examination.

Mr. Alto had many business interests in Sunset Valley. Colleagues described him as an ambitious workaholic with a fierce reputation for seizing entrepreneurial success. A source close to Mr. Alto said that he was aggressive in his approach to business that left many “burned” by their dealings with him.

“If they’re looking for suspects, they won’t be hard to find. Nick stood on a lot of toes to build his empire.” we were told.

Police say they are keen to talk to anyone who was in the Summer Hill areas the night before, and anyone who may have seen anything suspicious should contact Sunset Valley police.”

The police will have their hands full solving this one.

My son is so adorable. He is always smiling and playful when he is awake. After work, I can’t wait to get home for playtime with Adam. It won’t be long until he is walking around by himself.

That’s my boy!

Adam is like a little angel. Truly, he is a gift from heaven. When Adam sleeps he looks so content and carefree.

Every now and then we hire a babysitter so Jamie and I can have time for just the two of us. As we have come to depend on one another our love has grown strong. I provide for the family while Jamie cares for our child and home.

Life is good. My joy overflows.

One afternoon after work I receive a call from Susan. She wants to meet me at Pinochle Pond.

Susan and I are still good friends though lately we seem to see less of each other. It will be great to catch up with Susan. She has not been at work for a few days now.

When I arrive I find Susan staring out across Pinochle Pond. She has the look of forlorn concern on her face. I give her a friendly greeting but Susan’s expression does not change as she turns to look at me. Susan says she has some important news.

Amidst awkward gestures Susan tells me that she is handing in her resignation at work. I am shocked by the news. I protest her decision saying how great a team we make in the lab. We are on the brink of revolutionary breakthroughs in science, why would she want to throw it away now? But Susan says her mind is made up.

She also intends to leave Sunset Valley.

Susan’s further revelation has me speechless. A piece of my heart is stripped off torn from me. Susan has been more than a work colleague, more than a friend, more than…

Susan’s eyes are welling with the agony inside her. She tells me that our bond has been something special that she will never forget. But she can no longer bear the anguish she feels when she thinks of the harm she would bring if the truth were to be known. And the truth, she says, will eventually be known if she were to stay. I ask – what do you mean?

Susan is no longer able to hold herself. She bursts into tears and rushes off. I try to stop her but she demands that I let her leave. I let her go. Susan hesitates, turns, and comes back to embrace me. I hold her close; one last time. Gently Susan pushes away. Her eyes stare longingly into mine.

Forgive me Jacob. I love you.

And then she goes. I never see Susan again.
